Rinjani Trek 4D3N Eco-Trek
4 Days – 3 Nights
4 Days – 3 Nights
Pick you up at Senggigi or Teluk Kodek and or airport then transfer to Senaru Village. Prior to going to the traditional village of Senaru, first you will check in at your accommodation. Your guide will provide general information describing the route details, the local traditions and the things you might see along the trek and your program for the night, then you will have rest. After dinner you will be invited for a ritual called Ntaoq Lekoq Buaq led by spiritual leader called Melokaq in the traditional village of Senaru. He will give you a blessing as you enter the holy area that you should be purified from any unholy intention, and also to pray for health and safety during the trip to the mountain. After the procession you will return to your accommodation.
Before leaving for the trek you will go to the traditional village for a blessing from Melokaq then proceed to Rinjani Trek Centre (RTC) Senaru for registration. The RTC staff will explain the route in detail, what you might see, rubbish management and safety procedures. The first hours of the trek will climb through thick tropical forest which is rich in flora and fauna such as orchids, and long-tailed grey macaque monkeys and, if lucky, the rare black ebony leaf monkey, known locally as lutung. Rest stops are taken along the way, and at Post 2 Montong Satas shelter (1,500m), your guide will tell you village stories and local legends and myths such as Bunut Ngengkang banyan tree that looks like someone standing with their legs apart and the Batu Penyesalan stone. You will reach Post 3 Mondokan Lokaq (2,000m) through the forest after about five hours climb from Senaru for the first ritual act and lunch break. Afterward continue the ascent for another couple of hours through grassy meadows to Plawangan Senaru, the crater rim at 2,641m. From the crater rim are sweeping views across to Bali and its volcano, Mt Agung, and down inside the crater to the Segara Anak Lake (2,000m). Look for Mt. Baru (2,351m, which is an island in the lake with an active volcano that last erupted dramatically in 1994. After enjoying the view, Melokaq will do pray in the Crater Rim then give blessing to the clients. Enjoy your dinner followed by the night sounds. Dinner and overnight at Pelawangan Senaru.
Sunrise at the crater rim is a memorable start to Day 2. After you have breakfast Melokaq (Spritual Leader) will perform rituals and afterward the trek proceeds for a couple of hours down the trail to the crater-lake where the rest of the day is spent relaxing and swimming. There is plenty of time to explore the pilgrimage hot springs, said to have healing powers. The camp is by the lakeside.
After breakfast, start the three-hour steep ascent up to Plawangan 2 Sembalun crater rim (2,639m). Look out for edelweiss along the path. Enjoy the view of the lake from the other side and the island of Sumbawa across the tropical ocean. We will camp here and overnight.
A 3 am start is necessary for the hard three-hour climb to the summit (3,726m) walking on volcanic scree. Once there, enjoy proud feelings of satisfaction and the amazing sunrise views across the Wallace Line to Bali, Mt. Agung and Sumbawa, and down to the lake Segara Anak (2,000m) within the Rinjani crater, Mt. Baru (2,351m). Return down the ridge passing numerous edelweiss plants bunga abadi to the crater rim camp for a well-deserved breakfast. Then descend from Sembalun crater rim amidst the pine-like Casuarina species locally known as Cemara, perhaps seeing evidence of wild pigs. After walking about 3-5 hours reach Pada Balong (1,800m) through grassland used as cattle grazing by local people. Mt Rinjani summit (3,726m) towers above us, Indonesia’s second highest volcanic peak. From here is a beautiful view of Sembalun Lawang and Sembalun Bumbung villages, known for coffee production until the crop was changed to garlic to take the advantage of the garlic boom in early 1990s. The road head is reached after another four hours gentle descent through open country, and the trek ends at the Rinjani Information Centre at Sembalun.
